History comes alive in the historical buildings where history took place.
New life is breathed into the buildings to reflect the contemporary developments that are shaping history.
The contemporariness of Pier-2 Art Center is of a nature that keeps evolving, expanding, and adjusting. Over the years, we have kept history alive with the historical buildings, and reflect contemporary developments using contemporary approaches. The Center started with three warehouses and has expanded to embrace 25 warehouses, covering an area of 20 hectares. With a diverse offering of exhibitions and performances, ranging from creative craft fairs, performing arts, refined crafts activities, culture and creative design events, contemporary artistic events, and on-site artistic activities, this center has made art and culture more accessible to the general public by using friendly and easily understandable expressions. Even in recent years as the center has started to curate exhibitions for contemporary art, the idea of bridging the distance between art and the public is still part of its core mission.
The founding of CAIP is not so much the physical presence of a venue for art and cultural activities as it is the center's declaration to host exhibitions to reflect contemporary visual culture, which exactly echoes the spirit of the Pier-2 Art Center. CAIP is an art museum on the move. Where there is an exhibition, there is the museum. CAIP was created based on the ideas of diversity, flexibility and a boundless museum. It takes on a holistic attitude in exploring the shared experiences of contemporary visual culture. Hence, there will not only be the so-called "pure art" exhibits, but rather applicable art, pop culture and non-artistic audiovisual creative works will also fall within the CAIP's scope of focus.
Since 2014, the artist-in-residence program has brought groups of artists from abroad to stay and work temporarily in the center, thereby broadening the horizons of the City and facilitating the exchanges and interactions between local and foreign artists. This will expand the visual culture, to which the CAIP is committed, into the common experiences shared by all mankind, and bring the center's exhibitions and performances to a higher level. This is not only a direction in which the Pier-2 Art Center is heading, but also a milestone in Kaohsiung's track to be better connected to the international art circle.
