The Pier-2 Art Center is located at Yancheng District, One of Kaohsiung’s earliest populated areas.
Originally a warehouse site next to the Port of Kaohsiung,
It has seen history unfold;
All the traces are now hidden in the crevices of time.
During the Japanese occupation period,
The site was situated next to the fish market.
Bamboo containers for carrying fish were in great demand,
And shops selling bamboo containers and steamers opened one after another,
Making Wufu Road a “steamer” street.
At the time,
Bananas and sugar were the most important export commodities.
Transported by sugarcane trains;
They filled the portside warehouses one by one.
Cargo ships of all sizes departed from Kaohsiung,
Ready to sail for prosperity.
During the Second World War,
The bustling harbor was hushed due to U.S. bombings.
The sunken ships brought new life to the ship demolition and hardware industries,
Making up for the losses caused by the war.
And so Yancheng of Kaohsiung was once again a well-known name.
