Mazu
Mazu

Artist:A-Joe Weng
2015
Material: Stainless steel wire

Creative concept:
Mazu is the sea goddess for East Asian coastal areas. She is also known as the Tianshang Shengmu ("Sagely Heavenly Mother"), Tiansheng Shengmu ("Sagely Mother of the Heavenly Sages"), Tianhou ("Queen of Heaven"), Tianhou Niangniang ("Her Majesty, Queen of Heaven"), Tianfei ("Princess of Heaven"), Tianhou Niangniang ("Her Highness, the Princess of Heaven"), and Meizhou Niangma ("Queen Mother of Meizhou").
The influence of Mazu spread out from Meizhou, Fujian. Through myriad years, she has had enormous influence on East Asian sea culture and Chinese coastal culture. This is called "Mazu Culture" by scholars.
A metal wire sculpture of Mazu is placed on the south wall of C8 warehouse, one of the Dayi warehouses. Mazu is standing on the waves, lithe and solemn—an interesting way to portray Mazu that combines sea and coastal cultures with local religion. The 316L stainless steel wire (made from a special formulation by Kuang Tai Metal Industrial Co., Ltd.) can stand the test of the harsh weather.
